37 Tea F. Robson (Revised) — September 2023 There must be an historic trail of dad’s unwashed crockery from the North African coast all the way up the leg of Italy— where all tea breaks ended. But the war never really finished for him: he never stopped drinking tea, nor did he ever turn it down under any circumstances. Up till his teetotal end, drinking tea was a religious observance, the eleventh commandment of Army rule: The NAAFI break is to be observed at all times and under all circumstances. A few reference notes / background information for So Much Tea NAAFI — Navy, Army, Air Force Institutes — this was the section of the armed forces that looked after basic needs for servicemen, eg catering, housing, social facilities etc. A NAAFI break usually meant it was time for tea! Normandy landing (or D-Day) — 6th June ‘44. Dunkirk—May/June 1940. Cherbourg —Where dad finally managed to escape to catch a boat over the Channel. Lancastria— the ship that dad tried to escape in but was refused entry as he was a Scot! Jock— a slang term used for a Scotsman! Reference to the leg of Italy — after meeting the pope (Pope Pius XII) in the Vatican, along with his other comrades, dad was shot and wounded near Rimini. He also fought at the Battle of Monte Cassino. teetotal — a name used for someone who never, ever drinks! Some even take a solemn oath before the Almighty to stay off alcohol!
